"Internet-of-Things" for our
Older Generation

An efficient and non-intrusive response system was essential for families and caregivers to promptly address emergencies and regulate risks for their older adults.

History

Drawing from our experience with Silverline (a mobile app for the elderly), we laid the groundwork for ConnectedLife, by recognizing a market need to support Singapore's aging population.

Extensive testing and collaborations with Housing & Development Board of Singapore (HDB) and Starhub, a leading local telecom company, led us to revamp Silverline into a more holistic solution tailored to older adults and their caregivers' needs.

Role

I joined in 2015 during Silverline's hackathon days and have since led and shaped the design and research for ConnectedLife's evolution and product offerings. Recognised for my contributions, I was promoted from Interaction Designer to Senior Designer during the period I worked there.

This earlier career foundation shaped my systems thinking approach which shows in my more recent work.

Problem Statement

How do we support a more autonomous and independent living to address the needs of a fast-growing aging population?

We identified 2 distinct end-users:

  • Older Adults (Baby Boomers & Gen X)
  • their Families / Caregivers / Nursing Homes

User research highlighted challenges faced by older adults living independently. Recognizing caregivers' need for timely updates, we developed a digital monitoring system to address this gap.

Ecosystem Solution

Our cloud-based sensor architecture enabled a scalable, flexible, and accessible service. This cost-effective solution supported independent living through:

  • a mobile app and sensor dashboard connecting older adults and caregivers
  • a smart home sensor system for monitoring temperature, motion, and environment
  • 24/7 emergency call center
  • Insurance coverage in partnership with Singlife

DEFINING THE PRODUCT

Design Objectives

1

Mobile App for iOS and Android

Redesign the mobile app's core features, functionalities, and new information architecture to accommodated dual logins.

2-1

Sensor Dashboard and Monthly Reports

Design a user-friendly dashboard to contextualize and visually present data gathered from sensors and the mobile app.

3

Smart Home Sensors and Wearables

Design interfaces for wearables. Address and resolve edge-cases arising from system/environmental malfunctions through process flow analysis.

4

Branding, Visuals and Marketing

Create collaterals involving branding designs, a company website, data visualizations of monthly reports, EDMs, tutorial PDFS, and more.

KEY DELIVERABLE

Mobile & Companion Apps
for iOS and Android

The project involved redesigning a senior-friendly mobile app into a comprehensive solution for both older adults and their caregivers.

The iOS/Android app underwent significant updates to enhance accessibility and usability, including a preference for dark theme, larger buttons, and simplified functions. These changes were informed by extensive user testing during pilot trials.

Design, Test, Rinse and Repeat

I was very involved with the end-to-end product delivery. This included product testing, design strategy, competitor benchmarking, user interviews and usability testing, user and task flow creation, constant reiterations from wireframing to high-fidelity UI design, prototyping and developer handoff.

Finding Sparks of Joy

Designing complex features and flows for onboarding, emergency protocols, and device pairing were one of the many challenging but rewarding tasks we solved as a team. As the product evolved with healthtech, AI, and IoT advancements, the mobile app remained central to the solution.

KEY DELIVERABLE

Smart Home Sensors
and Wearables

The main challenge of this project was the complexity of it. Each device type had its own pairing method which required its own customised onboarding process.

The focus was on guiding users through the steps of adding devices, understanding optimal placement within the home, and successfully integrating them into the ConnectedLife platform.

KEY DELIVERABLE

Sensor Dashboard and Monthly Reports

The mobile app syncs with smart devices to provide round-the-clock home monitoring. Live data are taken from the sensors installed in the home. These insights are fed through the cloud and are visualised on the sensor dashboardMonthly reports gets generated to provide deeper analysis to assist caregivers in making informed decisions.

Overcoming Challenges

One of the trickiest design challenges was visualizing a 'lack of alerts'. The goal was to convey that an empty dashboard indicated a positive situation, free from emergencies or concerns. We communicated this by using vibrant colors for alerts, and neutral and cooler tones when things are okay.

Branding, Visuals and
Marketing Collaterals

The rebranding from Silverline to ConnectedLife explored a flexible and enduring identity system that reflects who ConnectedLife was, is becoming and where it's heading from here.

Numerous presentation decks, illustrations, digital, print, video and marketing collaterals were created to promote and illustrate the solution. One of the outcomes of this process was a redesign of the ConnectedLife Website.

(The company have evolved considerably since I left pre-COVID.)

The redesigned brand identity, inspired by Silverline's values, represents security and infinite possibilities.

By playing with form, negative space and icon symbollism, I designed  an intertwined lock which formed a heart weaved into an infinite loop. This signified safety, peace of mind and the limitless potential of technological innovation.

TAKEAWAYS & LEARNINGS

What's next?

My journey with ConnectedLife gave the opportunity to form deeper bonds with the local tech startup space while driving innovation across Singapore's aging care industry. I'm proud to have been part of a team that made a positive impact on the lives of older adults.

Since the pandemic, the company has since expanded its reach and influence in the healthtech industry, proving the value of remote health monitoring and smart living solutions.
